De-Duplicate yourself with SIS
Iomega NAS based on Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 offers Enterprise features that assist to substantially reduce storage usage. Reductions are even more significant when multiple users save the same file onto the file server.
Single Instance Storage (SIS), also known as de-duplication, saves a single copy of a file, directing all other copies with a pointer to the single instance of the file. This means only one copy resides on the file server regardless of the number of people using/updating the file.
A whitepaper developed by Microsoft about the SIS solution can be downloaded here. For further information on the Iomega Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 NAS range or to discuss your storage requirements please contact your Lan 1 Account Manager or email mbrand@lan1.com.au.

Tolly Group Report: FortiMail-100
The Tolly Group, a well respected independent testing organization, was commissioned by Fortinet to test the antispam, antivirus and email security features of FortiMail-100 and Barracuda 200. This test report authoritatively illustrates FortiMail's higher accuracy rates and features.
Based on the test results, the FortiMail-100 key advantages are:
Support for per-user/mailbox quarantine and policy management
Support for LDAP recipient verification
Superior network deployment options
Highly effective antispam and antivirus threat intelligence developed by Fortinet
Significantly lower rate of false negatives (missed spam)
Significantly lower rate of false positives (incorrectly blocked messages)
The Tolly Group report on the FortiMail-100 vs. the Barracuda 200 is now available and can be obtained through your Lan 1 Account Manager.

Adaptec Wins 2008 Technology of the Year Award From InfoWorld
Snap Server 720i iSCSI Appliance Named "Best Entry-Level SAN"
Adaptec's Snap Server 720i SATA-based iSCSI storage appliance has won the "Best Entry-Level SAN" category as part of the InfoWorld 2008 Technology of the Year Awards. InfoWorld, the leading integrated media brand for IT decision makers, recognized 45 products across nine general categories in its 2008 Technology of the Year honors.
InfoWorld's 2008 Technology of the Year award winners represent the cream of the 2007 storage crop. Chosen by InfoWorld Test Center editors and reviewers, they include the best file system, best SAN solution, best iSCSI SAN, best entry-level SAN, best unified storage solution, best backup solution for SMBs, and best portable drive with encryption.
According to the InfoWorld reviewer, "The Adaptec Snap Server 720i combines great scalability, reassuring high-availability features, and excellent management tools, all at a very affordable price and with a three-year warranty on hardware. Few arrays in its class can even come close to that."
Don Chouinard, director of product management and marketing for the Storage Solutions Group at Adaptec, said: "The Snap Server 720i has been designed to provide cost-effective, high performance, highly reliable RAID storage for mission critical application servers or backup servers. Winning this award category confirms the status of the Snap Server 720i as the best overall SAN available for mid-size companies."
"InfoWorld tests upwards of 200 IT products every year, and we see many, many good ones," said Doug Dineley, InfoWorld's Test Center Executive Editor. "Our Technology of the Year award winners represent the best products in the most important product categories."
InfoWorld's Technology of the Year Awards are not open to outside nominations. Winners are drawn from all of the products tested during the past year, with the final selections made by InfoWorld's Test Center staff. All products reviewed by the Test Center are eligible to win. Full results appear on www.infoworld.com.

What is the Difference Between Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switching?
| Layer 3 |
Route everywhere |
| Route once, switch afterwards |
| Layer 2/3 |
Switch where you can, route where you must |
| Layer 2 |
Switch everywhere |
Layer 2 switches forward ethernet frames based on MAC address. Layer 3 switches forward IP packets based on destination IP address. Many modern Layer 3 switches operate at wire speed with no performance penalty for Layer 3 forwarding vs Layer 2 forwarding.
A popular approach to providing the benefits of inter-VLAN routing and ensuring LAN performance is not degraded has been to implement Layer 3 switches, using Layer 3 switches for inter-VLAN routing as opposed to traditional routers is recommended for the following reasons:
- Performance versus Cost - Layer 3 switches are much more cost effective than routers for delivering high-speed inter-VLAN routing
- Port density - Layer 3 switches are enhanced Layer 2 switches and have the same high port densities that Layer 2 switches have. Routers on the other hand typically have a much lower port density.
- Flexibility - Layer 3 switches allow you to mix and match Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching as required.
Note: Most Layer 3 switches do not have as much memory or hardware resources for routes as do "routers." This makes many Layer 3 switches useful for customer access ports or light-duty datacenter aggregation roles, but most are not suitable as eBGP speakers or for aggregating traffic from more than a few dozen to a few hundred servers. |
